When we deny or minimize our thoughts, we are discounting how important they are, especially our fear-based thoughts.
“Everything begins with a thought” you hear me often say, and that’s important because today I want to talk about the fact that you have no idle thoughts. No thoughts that are unimportant, shall we say. Every thought that you have produces either peace or chaos in your mind. It’s one or the other, there’s nothing in between.
I can’t emphasize enough how important this is to know. So that’s why we must notice our thoughts. What we tend to do, and this is psychologically true, is deny the thoughts we don’t like. We push them away, so we think we’re not thinking about them, yet they remain in the background, eating away at our peace.
Or we minimize. We say, “Oh, it’s not so bad; other people have it worse. I can live with that,” and so forth. And then we don’t do anything about these stressful thoughts. And they remain with us like a slow-growing cancer. So this is not helpful, obviously.
When we deny or minimize our thoughts, we are discounting how important they are, especially our fear-based thoughts.
Why do I say that? Because every thought produces an effect. Now follow me. We tend to think that we see something and then we respond to it. That’s universally what we believe living here on planet Earth. But the opposite is true.
Rather, what you experience, what you see, hear, taste and feel are based on what you presume, what is deep within you- what you believe is true for you at the moment. And that constantly changes, because we’re always changing our minds about things.

When we’re not in touch with our inner wisdom, our thoughts are usually going to reflect some sort of fear-based idea. And so we’ll look out on the world and what do we see? We see trouble, we see pain, we get into fights with people because we think that they don’t like us or that they’re angry with us.
We make stuff up. That’s what we do. We make everything up based on our beliefs. So if your belief is that people are not to be trusted, you will walk the world with fear as your coach guiding you to defend yourself as soon as you detect an attack. And you will feel attacked because that is what you are expecting.
If, on the other hand, your belief is that people are basically good, you will have an entirely different experience. You will enjoy people. You’ll be open to hearing what they have to say before you make any judgments. And you will focus on the positive aspects of a person rather than the negative.
This is my belief. People are basically deep in their hearts, good, because our Source is good. We are body, mind, and spirit. And when you bring out your spirituality, you’re going to demonstrate the characteristics of a spiritual being. Which means being open-minded, being compassionate, being loving, being willing to listen to other people and hear what they have to say before you jump to some conclusion.
These are the characteristics you will display when you’re listening to your inner wisdom. On the other hand, if you’re not in touch with that inner wisdom, as I said before, you’re going to perceive a scary world because now your mind is in a conflict state between concern for something and how to protect yourself. You have constant conflict because of the crazy thoughts whirling around in your mind.
This is the stuff that you project onto the environment around you and so that’s what you see. You get sick or someone close to you gets sick. You see trouble around every corner. In other words, you find all the things that are going to match up with your state of consciousness.
Let me give you an example of this. Back in the 1960s, there were quite a few TV programs that were based around courtroom dramas, and the most famous one was Perry Mason. I used to watch it with my mom on our 14 inch tv. The scene would open in a courtroom. Witnesses would get up on the stand and would testify to what they had seen. They would swear on the Bible, “This is the truth, the whole truth, so help me God.” And they would tell what they saw. I really didn’t get it at the time, that different people would get on the stand and report widely varying accounts. If that’s what they saw, then everybody else who was there would see the same thing, right? But that wasn’t so. Because one person would say, oh, I saw a thin man running away and the other person would say, I saw a woman running away or I saw lights flashing or who knows what else!

When I think about it now, I know the reason people can be in exactly the same location at exactly the same time and not see the same thing. It’s because of the belief system of that person. That’s why.
Expand that notion to every part of your life because everything you see is based on your beliefs.
Beliefs are the thoughts we have in our mind about who we are, who the people around us are, how we negotiate through life, what things are good for us and what things are not good for us (and wow, do we get that one wrong!) so these are all the outward appearances that originate from our inner beliefs. We experience what our belief system accepts as our reality.
So please take heed! I want you to be really aware of what you’re thinking. Again, don’t deny when you get a thought that’s uncomfortable. Sit with it, let it come to the surface so that you can examine it and see where it’s coming from. Why is it there? Is it coming from love or fear? And what can you do about it? Because once you know what you’re thinking, then you can do something about it. You can absolutely bring it to your Higher Self and it’ll tell you what to do.
How freeing it is to have this trait of open-mindedness, the freedom to explore new avenues to travel in your life. Don’t consign yourself to live in this static state of “It has to be this way. This is how I am and I can’t change,” because if that’s your belief, you’re in for a lot of pain and suffering. So don’t do that.
Observe your thoughts and examine the ones that are causing you distress because you don’t want to stay there. You can do this and you must do this if you want to be happier, healthier and more successful in everything you do.

As a child, you learn to walk, and you get better at it as you go along. The same thing applies with developing your spirituality. Once you know what your goal is, you can work toward it. But you must know what that is you truly want, right? There are only 2 choices really—peace or chaos. You will say you want peace but are you willing to develop the belief system and traits that will assure you a peaceful mind?
