Abundance. I’m sure if I asked 9 people what abundance is, I’d get 9 different answers. We all have a different understanding of the word abundance. For me, being a holistically-minded person, I give the word a much broader meaning, in all the ways I’ve been talking about it since I began this series.
Last time, I was speaking about the relationship of abundance and money because many people think abundance means “bucks”, right? and that’s true. Yes, definitely. Abundance is about our financial peace of mind. You can’t be abundant monetarily and be hungry at the same time (with some rare exceptions)
But that’s not all that it means. It means much more because abundance doesn’t begin with money. It doesn’t mean once I have money I’m abundant. Not at all. Having money is the natural outcome of having an abundance mentality.
So how do we get an abundance mentality? There are many ways of course. Many roads lead to ‘Rome.’ So, you find the one that works for you.
However, let me offer a little exercise, and one approach to find your way toward abundance. To maintain that journey is to understand, “What is your why?” This is a major theme in the numerous coaching programs that I’ve taken. It’s essential that you know your why, to sit down with yourself and ask, “What’s my why?”
My ‘why’ is helping businesswomen negotiate the stresses of life, whether it’s business or family concerns, because I value having had help myself when I needed it. I’ve always been filled with gratitude and joy to be given help when my chips were down, when I didn’t know where to turn or who to trust.
So this is the exercise:
To brainstorm your why; what’s important to you to keep you striving toward your abundance goal. Having an abundance goal that you maintain is everything. It’s where you want to be. You can always get better. You can always get more expansive, more creative, more joyful in every moment and that, to me, is what abundance is all about. It’s a journey. It’s a journey of discovery, change and growth.
When you can say, “I’m totally abundant all the time, 24/7”, then you’re enlightened. I think most of us are not quite there. So one of the best ways to get there is to brainstorm your ‘whys’ to the fifth degree. Your 1st answer will be a pre-cursor: “Because I want to be rich.” But why do you want to be rich? “Because I want to buy all the things I like.” And why do you want to buy all those things? “Because it makes me feel safe.” And why does it make you feel safe to buy all those things? “Because then people will like me.” And why do you want people to like you? “Because I’m afraid of being alone.”
Now, I’m not saying these are YOUR whys, but it does take a bit of self-reflection, of digging below the surface thoughts and beliefs, to get to the true value you place on your life. When you can reach that level of honesty, your path to abundance will be short! If you know that your abundance comes from being with others, you can choose work that will fulfill that goal in a meaningful way. It will keep you moving toward your goal of success in your business, in your relationships, in your family, to feel good in your skin, to feel confident and comfortable and knowing that you have a purpose in life, and that this world is a better place with you in it!
Every one of us has some beautiful unique gift to offer to the world from our abundance, and that’s what we want to get in touch with and maintain it as much as we can. Think about it from the other side too. If you lose heart and stop doing what you are an expert at, what you’re great at, what gives you joy, if you stop doing that and say “Oh, why am I bothering to knock myself out?; If you do that, you’re really doing a couple of things:
1. You are denying the gift you have to give to people who could really use it, who need it, and
2. You’re not allowing yourself the joy of giving to others.
If you stop talking to your family, if you stop loving them, and nurturing them and joking around with them and doing all the things families do to be happy together; if you stop doing that, everybody loses out. It could easily lead to depression.
There are so many aspects to having abundance:
*being abundant in your health, in the way you take care of yourself, that you eat clean, get enough rest–you know the drill– exercise, socialize. You don’t have to be an Olympian. I’m not saying you have to do the four minute mile. You just need a regular routine because it’ll be your legacy.
*Whatever you create out of your uniqueness becomes your legacy to your family, to your business, to society at large. And that’s a beautiful thing. So the more you prioritize your health, the more you keep yourself going forward, doing the things you love, you are going to make more money. And, therefore your influence will be greater and you’ll be able to help more people.
That’s another one of my why’s– helping impoverished women in other countries to become business women on their own. Heifer, International is a foundation which teaches women living in poverty how to raise farm animals, so that they can use them for food, sell them for goods they need or schooling for their children, and also teach other women how to do the same. This literally changes people’s lives in these countries when these women can take care of their own families. So I just love love love the work they do. I’m for businesswomen, 24/7, every which way!
*Remember, seeking your abundance is a process, as I said, it’s a journey. You’re not going to reach all your goals tomorrow. But, the fun is in the doing. And imagining all the exciting ideas that come to you as you move towards your goal. It should be fun. It should absolutely be enjoyable. And if it isn’t, then you need to go back to your whys, and dig deeper. When you love what you do, you’re going to do it well and because you do it well, you’re going to be successful at it. And people will want whatever it is you’re doing or selling or teaching.
*It’s a package deal. All these things go together. So take a sticky note, write a daily or weekly goal on it and put it on the edge of your computer screen or nearby as a constant reminder. Will you do it? It really is a mind shift I’m talking about.
*If your abundance mentality is anemic, a shot of mind shift is in order! Nothing changes if you don’t change your current beliefs and routines. It is all too easy to fall back on old habits and ways of thinking that don’t serve you well. Things never go smoothly all the time, right, we know that’s just not the way life is. Your job is to notice when you abandoned your calm and make a new choice.
I can shift my thinking when it goes off the rails by doing my morning routine. Getting back on track happens a lot more quickly because I’ve been doing my morning method for many years. I’m just not the same person I was 10 years ago, even five years ago. I’m not that nervous, anxious type-A kind of person I was a long time ago. I’ve become more secure in my direction because I’ve recognized my why’s, and they keep me on track.
An abundance mentality comes in all shapes and sizes. Uncover your ‘whys’ for an express ticket to success in every aspect of your busy life!
